After reading these names, some of them may sound familiar. That's because there are many streets, schools and buildings named after some of these men and their families. Past members who have been honored by the township with a landmark dedication are in bold font.
Many of these men served other roles in the early days of the township. For example, Charles Beck and family owned a general store in the early 1900's, which was later purchased by Edward Peters; both men have streets named after them. David Nelson Roberge, a founding member of the RVFD, also served as the police chief for 10 years and the township clerk until his death in 1948. Roberge School was named after him. Leopold Herrman was the department's first chief, there is a street named after him, too. Many of these men were also veterans of the first and second world wars.
Every year during Memorial Day weekend, the men and women of the RVFD place an American flag for each of these men on the front lawn of the north firehouse to ensure their legacy. If you would like to learn more about the early days of the fire department, we suggest you read the essay by Ex-Chief Tom Shine, Sr., which can be found on the history page. Another great read is "River Vale" by Edmund Moderacki, which can be purchased at the River Vale Library.
